Korean rail yard fortifies security and fire detection with networked system

Korean rail yard fortifies security and fire detection with networked system

Editor / Provider: Axis Communications | Updated: 10/31/2012 | Article type: Infrastructure

Mission
Korea Railroad is a public corporation in charge of managing the national railroad of Korea and related business. The Goyang Rolling Stock Workshop (GRSW) of the metropolitan rolling stock maintenance depot is the starting point and final destination of Korea Train eXpress (KTX). It sits on more than 1.3 million square meters of land and consists of 31 buildings.

To ensure the safety of the large site of the GRSW, TNX Systems, Axis's partner, proposed and installed full HD-grade Axis network cameras. Axis PTZ dome network cameras installed in the GRSW not only provide full HDTV quality and 20x optical zoom, but also have day and night functionality to provide high-quality images in places where there is almost no light.

Also, Axis CS-mount multifocal DC-Iris lens deliver 1-megapixel/HDTV high resolution streams with 30 fps using progressive scan to provide excellent quality images without any motion blur.

Ensuring safety through integration with the fire detection system
The automatic fire detection system automatically detects heat or smoke in case of fire, indicates where the fire started, and triggers alarms. Axis network cameras and TNX VMS are linked to the automatic fire detection system and display accurately where the fire started on a map and show images taken with the cameras in a pop-up. With the ability to now correctly grasp the situation and respond when a fire breaks out, the loss of lives and property are minimized, and shortcomings of existing firefighting facilities are remedied.

Client/server architecture makes it possible to access images anytime, anywhere
The GRSW used Axis network cameras and TNX's VMS IMVS to build the client/server-based video surveillance system that makes it possible to monitor images in real-time and search and play back recorded images not only at the central control room, but also in each office of the inspection garage. IMVS' perfect performance has been proven.

Using the optical communication network to install stable network cameras
Optical fiber was used to build the network infrastructure in the rolling stock depot on a large lot consisting of many buildings. As a result, it was possible to reduce the cost far more than with the existing analog system. PoE is supported so that power and cabling construction is not necessary, thereby reducing installation costs. Since the streaming is based on optical communication (real-time streaming protocol), which prevents image loss and noise due to transmission distance, the best image quality was secured.

Korean church improves congregation safety with networked surveillance

Korean church improves congregation safety with networked surveillance

Mission
Gwacheon Church and its congregation was founded 60 years ago. Although the church had managed well without any security system such as CCTV, its rapid growth made it necessary to more comprehensively manage church property. In particular, the church wanted to install an easy-to-use, yet efficient video surveillance system for the kindergarten within the church compound, as well as the church interior, exterior, and parking lots.

But the church’s main building, education center, and social works wing are separated by large distances so integrating the system was a challenge. The solution was to install an IP camera system capable of supporting network infrastructure and high-resolution video.

Given the extensive, open-ended nature of churches, high-resolution images were an absolute necessity for monitoring. For surveillance of spacious prayer halls and large parking lots, Axis network cameras were the ideal solution. Gwacheon Church has improved its security level significantly through the use of Axis network cameras which are suitable for various applications and environments.

Solution
Initially, Axis partner, Sunjin Infotech, set out to create a network infrastructure by using an SDSL sender/receiver at the education and social works centers along with a video extension solution through network cables in spots where monitoring was needed.

Installing conventional analog CCTV between remote buildings may incur significant costs and headaches for installation and maintenance along with signal deterioration when sending and receiving analog signals. Gwacheon Church cut costs while gaining high-resolution video signals by using SDSL technology that creates an environment to connect IP-based equipment. Through the network-based technology, the video images saved in the NVR system can be delivered to far-away locations via the UTP cable.

For security monitoring, indoor fixed dome cameras and fixed cameras were installed in several areas. In three outdoor parking lots, PTZ cameras and fixed cameras were mounted to eliminate blind spots. This avoided congestion problems during peak worship service times and simultaneously solved security issues.

All of this was done using the PoE technology which allows power supply and video recording with one cable. All of the cameras could monitor in real-time while permitting video searches via NVR later.

In addition to being able to save and search video files via NVR, the system is highly flexible to a degree that system managers can perform real-time monitoring anytime, from anywhere. The church tested several video security systems but the Axis solution was the clear choice; one of the reasons being that it enabled parents to view videos of their children in kindergarten from any location.

Result
With Axis network cameras, Gwacheon Church has deployed and is managing a comprehensive security system with minimum staff. Since the cameras have been carefully selected to meet specific requirements, they offer maximum effectiveness for each application. The camera system, including the 2-megapixel HDTV camera and an array of high-resolution network cameras, guarantees the safety of the church and its congregation through progressive scan high-quality video.

Berlin multipurpose arena upgrades video and fire warning systems

Berlin multipurpose arena upgrades video and fire warning systems

Editor / Provider: Bosch Security Systems | Updated: 10/29/2012 | Article type: Security 50

The O2 World arena is situated on the banks of the Spree river between Berlin's eastern railway station and the Warsaw bridge. It is Europe's most modern functioning arena. Thanks to its professional environment and the atmospheric ambience the arena offers fans, it also became home to two of the most successful sports clubs in Berlin.

The arena can accommodate 17,000 people and  guarantees an optimum audio quality and a great view at every seat. The venue is also designed in such a way that it can be converted from a concert hall to a sports arena in a matter of hours, with the safety of players, artists and visitors being top priority.

In September 2007, Bosch was commissioned to provide a security solution for the facility, predominantly because of its extensive expertise in all low voltage sectors. The arena is equipped with an intelligent fire warning system that is controlled via two networked fire panels inside the building, while 2300 special detectors prevent false alarms from occurring.

The interior is monitored by linear optical smoke detectors and linear heat detectors. In addition, the roof features aspirating smoke detectors to keep the arena free from smoke in the event of a fire. In case of fire, the panels fulfill an extensive range of functions throughout the building, such as controlling the smoke, heat venting and sprinkler systems. Two networked electroacoustic systems are in place to initiate evacuation in the event of an alarm, linked up to a total of 1200 loudspeakers distributed across the different parts of the building.

Bosch was also given high specifications to meet in terms of video surveillance. A total of 90 PTZ cameras were installed in the internal and external areas of the arena to make sure all sectors are monitored.

In the event of an alarm, the MPEG4 recording system allows up to 25 images per second to be recorded at extremely high quality on multiple cameras. The data network installed at the complex includes some 170 km of cable, and enables operation of around 2200 ports for PC workstations, IP telephony and the O2 World's own TV system, Arena TV.

All information from the individual surveillance systems is transmitted to the higher-level system of monitoring stations. Each of the three work stations is equipped with a large screen, and there is a separate workstation in the building that is set aside for use by the police. Following the opening of the O2 World in September 2008, Bosch experts were on hand to monitor every event for four weeks, to check all systems thoroughly. These experts are now tasked with the ongoing day-to-day maintenance of the arena's fire detection and intrusion alarm systems, electroacoustic systems, video surveillance equipment and higher-level monitoring stations.

Italian cathedral protects premises and relics with IP video

Italian cathedral protects premises and relics with IP video

Editor / Provider: Milestone Systems | Updated: 10/26/2012 | Article type: Security 50

Milestone Systems' open platform IP VMS is being used with Sony network cameras by the Andria Cathedral in Italy for security surveillance and to display religious services to congregations sitting in the chapel and side naves to the central church.

The Cathedral of Andria rests in the Puglia region of southern Italy, an artistic and historic treasure for which a video surveillance system was requested. Dating from the 12th century, the cathedral contains a famed precious relic, "The Holy Thorn," believed to be from the Crown of Thorns forced on the head of Christ before His crucifixion. It also holds the tombs of two wives of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, Yolanda of Brienne and Elizabeth of England, as well as a 13th century icon of the Madonna and a 15th century bust of Francesco II del Balzo, Duke of Andria, attributed to the sculptor Francesco Laurana.

Given the importance of the building and its historical treasures, church authorities commissioned a special technologically advanced surveillance system for the main goal of monitoring the premises during night conditions. Side benefits were quickly found for faithful visitors of the services.

The cathedral was equipped with 32 Sony video cameras, a serie of PTZ models. These are both HD and full HD. Thanks to special IR LEDs, the cameras achieve night vision even in pitch darkness.

The video from all of the cameras is archived in Milestone XProtect VMS and viewed live through XProtect Smart Client interface. In addition to serving as daytime and nighttime security video, the system allows church-goers in the lateral naves to see the religious functions held in the presbytery and side chapel, displaying the high quality live images of the services to the adjacent areas.

The images are relayed to six 40-inch screens attached to the central columns of the cathedral, which can also be video-projected in a large adjoining chapel. The system can furthermore be used to show DVDs, audio/video guides, cultural and tourist presentations -- a benefit that is much appreciated by visitors.

"Operating in sites of major historic and cultural significance is especially satisfying, all the more so in cases like this where the religious dimension is deeply important," explained Alfredo Donadei, Senior Channel Account Manager, Video Security in Europe, Sony Electronics. "The solution was designed and installed in the cathedral by Tecnoimpianti Pizzolorusso, with whom we have a long-standing collaboration. The system stores all the video surveillance data in a special server, managed by Milestone XProtect Professional software. For better security and data management, the server has been equipped with four HDDs of various capacities, configured in RAID modality."

"The church authorities are extremely satisfied, not only with the security performance of the system, but also with the extraordinary quality of the images transmitted," said both Gianluca and Francesco Pizzolorusso, owners of Tecnoimpianti Pizzolorusso.

The Alpina Dolomites Lodge, located on the Alpe de Siusi (Seiser Alm) in Italy South Tyrol province, was faced with the need to have video surveillance system that could not only ensure guests safety but protect its guests without being invasive of their privacy, and that would fit in perfectly with the modern architecture and design of the complex.

The structure required video surveillance system with aesthetic features that would uniformly fit into the refined design of the complex and the elegance of the furnishings, and would not disturb the freedom and peacefulness of the guests.

The solution developed by Aviscon avails itself of 46 Axis network cameras connected to a Milestone server, that allow for the effective monitoring of both indoor and outdoor areas. Part of the installation was carried out while the hotel was being built, to ensure safety of the construction site, where more than 100 workers were present on a daily basis.

Compact and small-sized Axis cameras were chosen, with a discreet presence and outstanding performance, capable of producing images with megapixel resolution and HDTV, with high quality. The nine indoor corridors were each equipped with two Axis 209FD network cameras specifically fitted with long lens. Their ultracompact design and depth of only four centimeter  made it possible to easily install them on the ceiling, while the optics ensure full coverage of the 45 meter-long corridors.

For the garage and outdoor premises, the hotel opted for Axis P3344 due to its WDR and functionality for both day and night. Axis P1344 completes the video surveillance requirements for the outdoor areas. They are protected against dust, rain, snow and sunlight and can work at temperatures as low as -40°C.

To allow the owners the possibility for remote monitoring via mobile and fixed devices installed in another hotel complex located 27 km away, a wi-fi type network architecture was developed with dorsal positioned on the summit of the mountain that physically separates the two structures. The fact that the system includes PoE and system alarms are managed via the Milestone server has reduced the need for servicing, while the antitampering alarms enable instant detection of any attempts to tamper with the cameras.
